S70 heater core

I' got a 1998 S70 GLT with 86,000 miles. I'm getting a faint smell of coolant when I first turn on the heater. Sounds like a heater core and I looked at it from the driver's foot area. It is dry under there and I can see where it is mounted in the ducting. I'm being told by a couple of repair shops that the AC evaporator needs to come out to to do the job and quotes from $750 to $1,000. What does it really take to R&R the heater core. I see Groton's has it for $161.
