Being a white engine has nothing to do with the number of cylinders it has. It was kind of interesting how that came about. While we were in 850 New Car Features class the instructor refered to the B5254F as a white engine and everybody went "Huh!?!?" Mind you, nobody I ever knew in the business called the red engine a red engine, we simply refered to them by there engine designation, B23 B230 B28F B280 etc. The instructor went on to explain that the Swedes refered to the red engine as a red engine because it was red, duh! They called the white motor white because it was left in the white. Metal that is left in it's natural state is refered to as being in the white, like the white engines are. From there on out everybody that I knew in the Volvo world that had some kind of technical position called them out as red engines and white engines just like they had been doing it that way since day one. Now, years later, anything that comes from the B6304F linege, regardless of displacement or number of cylinders is refer to as a white engine. Makes you wonder what they refer to the D24 and B27 lines as, we had a name for them but you can rest assured it was not very nice.
