Car shopping on Christmas Eve?

A 2001 with only 45K miles? Those are probably the hydraulic lifters. If the noise goes away after 5 minutes, then you are OK. If not, let someone else buy it.
The lifter noise is usually a result of sludge build up and over cooked oil, meaning poor maintenance. If it happens on multiple cylinders and does not go away with increased oil pressure, the fix can be expensive.
