I pondered that very question, in passing, right before I yanked out a half shaft. I've done it three times now without a problem.
Come to think of it, I Really don't think it would be a problem. The third time was in a gas station parking lot. To make a long story short, the axle shaft came out of the transmission and I was left wondering why my car wouldn't move. So I shifted and turned everything in the trans/diff, probably at great speed, and suffered no ill effects save for a loss of a little trans fluid.
If you're going to swap drive shafts, consider replacing the tranmission fluid and the oil seals on the trans output. They're cheap and there's never a better time to do it.
