I never owned a Volvo until the new P2s so I can't compare it to the Volvo of old.
On this car, Volvo was learning and tweaking with the throttle (fly by wire) and transmission software for a good 3-4 years after 2001.
Auto transmission is the weakest point of this car. 2001's early software was harsh on this transmission. Checking to make sure fluids have been drain+filled or flushed every 30k is probably a good idea (Dealer service doesn't recommend this amazingly enough) and be sure to check if you have the updated transmission software.
An AWD will have to deal with the common angle gear seal leaks.
