If you don't DIY, you will need a cheap mechanic in either case. Even the 850s are over 10 years old.
I like 240s, but the 850s have better rust protection and more power. Both will need to have maintenance papers available so you know what has been done to the car.
The 97 850 has the better tranny, as does the 98 S70. Keep looking and you will find something that has you name on it.
