With a compression greater than 10:1, you would waste gasoline if you use 87 octane. The knock sensors will retard timing and the ECU will allow more fuel into the cylinders in an attempt to cool things off.
I ran 89 octane in my 1998 with the HPT, but over 5,000 rpm it balked because it then needed 92 octane.
The difference in price isn't much, 10 cents/gallon per up grade. With an 18 gallon tank you are paying $1.80 or $3.60 more for a complete fill up. About 1 cup of coffee.
