Volvos seem to be particulary susceptible to this problem. If you overfill the tank and get liquid gasoline into the the line that goes to the charcoal filter, the car will idle badly. The only cure is to not overfill.
Of course, if you filled up the car at the same time a tanker truck is filling the station's pumps, it is possible that you might have pumped a lot of junk into your tank which is now stuck in the filter.
