Oil change interval question XC90 2004

A light pressure turbo generates a lot of heat, read 40W. At start up you would like to have 5W. Go to a 5W40 synthetic and forget what temp it is outside.
Watch your oil consumption. Anything above 1 quart every 5K miles, then go to 10W40 and see if it is any better. If the consumption doesn't get better with 10W40, clean out the oil separator and start with 5W40 again. (OR use a can of AutoRx to clean up the gunk - follow directions on bottle).
