Mike:

I believe the clicking sound you are hearing is normal. I'll bet its the pulsing of the injection system delivering fuel to the injectors. A clicking sound is usually not a worry, versus a knocking sound whick will be definitely reason for concern. Volvo's 5 cylinder engines are very well made and will perform quite well if properly maintained.
