Wheel alignment problems? V70-XC70 1999

Hi Matt,

I own a 1999 XC and had a similar problem. The front-end tow would never stay fixed. I would had the tow adjusted and at the Dealer several times and always got the same stupid excuses you got.

So I took it to an independent shop. After playing around with the front end for 2 months trying several different ideas we finally discovered the problem and got it fixed.

In my situation it seems that when I had my transmission valve body replace to try to correct rough shifting the Dealer technicians dropped the engine/transmission/sub-frame to installed a new valve body. The dealer technicians did not re-install the sub-frame (or engine cradle) correctly. The 4 mounting brackets (one at each 4 corners of the sub-frame) were not correctly aligned such that the sub-frame was not locked to the body frame thus cause the sub-frame to have free movement. Or to state the problem another way, every time I stopped the car the sub-frame (which holds the engine and transmission to the car) would slide a few millimeters. And when I put my foot on the gas the sub-frame would slide a few millimeters again. This motion would cause the tow to be constantly changing hence, I never could get the tow adjusted correctly and my tires were being chewed off the car.

If the 2001 XC is similar to the 1999 XC then the Dealer Technicians dropped the sub-frame to remove/replace the sway bar. So they either did one of 2 things

1 - When the dealer replaced the sway bar they did not do a simple front-end alignment because Volvo NA being cheep would not pay for a front alignment. In this case go and have a front alignment done and do what I did and never go back to that Dealer for service. After my experience I am now Loyal to my new Volvo Mechanic.

2 - If the sub-frame was dropped then take your car to an independent Volvo mechanic like I did and explain to him your situation. The mechanic (if he is knows what he is doing) should be able to correct your problem in an hour by correcting installing the sub-frame and doing an alignment.

Good Luck,

Steven---
