Thank you for posting your solution!

Now, the heater core. It is easy to replace, takes about 2 hours for someone as slow as me. Any spilled coolant can be mopped up with great quanities of newspaper.
The reason the heat doesn't work is due to the corrosion inside the core, blocking the flow.
