The driver's sun visor on Arabella, our '96 850, has been suffering from the dread floppy visor - to the point that even my 5 foot high wife, who normally drives with it down, was irritated by it (at 6 feet plus, I had long since gone way past irritation).

I'm not sure how long this will last, but I think I've found at least a short term fix. We had an extra one of those plastic hangers that department stores use to hang slacks and skirts, with little clips to grab the waistband. There are two kinds of these: one kind has metal sliders that, once the waistband is in the clip, slide down to close the clip; the other kind, and the kind I used for this fix, have longer flat metal springs that close the clips unless you hold them open (picture your thumb and index finger held out straight, but made of flat spring steel and about 3/4" long, closing like pliers).

I removed the clips with a couple of screwdrivers, some gentle persuasion, and a bad word or two. I then dug out of my junk drawer in the shop two thin plastic shims that started life as one of those "we can offer you a credit card that will look like this" promotional bits; but any thin, flexible plastic (bits from a soda bottle, shampoo bottle, etc. should work too).

I put the plastic shims on each face of the visor, right where the support arm enters the visor, and slid one of the springs from the hanger down over the shims until it had gone as far onto the visor as it could. I then removed the shims, and repeated with the second spring right next to the first one.

The springs put some pressure on the visor material at the pivot, and the increased friction makes the visor less prone to flopping down. So far, it's just been a couple of weeks, and it's been working fine. I have no idea how long it will last, which is why I describe it as a "fix." But it will at least buy some more use out of this visor, before I have to replace it.
