A tool to keep the engine from turning. With the #1 cylinder about to go to TDC, insert clothsline rope into the sparkplug hole. This will keep the cyl from reaching TDC and prevent the crankshaft from turning while you remove the bolt on the pulley.
It is just a little harder for the white block engines because the plug hole is in the center of the combustion chamber rather than angled from the side like the red blocks. That and the plug hole is way down in the head making it hard to get the rope to circle the piston crown.
This method is not intended for the casual mechanic, who shouldn't be removing the crank pulley anyway.
