If you want an AWD wagon, you have to look for a V70 with AWD or an XC70 and not any USA 850's which are FWD only. The earlier AWD are mechanical and prone to problems from the angle gear box with it's pressed gear fittings.
If your 240 handled well in the snow and ice, a normal FWD 855 will take you there also. The maint on an 850 is not bad when you get used to it. The aluminum block engines are all interferance type, so the timing belt cannot be ignored. Newer than 1995 requires a scanner to get the trouble codes, but those can be had for cheap.
Just try to get a car with maintenance history. The 850/70 were prone to evap leaks, which means that the AC fails. Replacing a leaky evap is like replacing the blower in a 240.
