Matt, the service reminder light is not to be confused with the check engine light. The former is just a reminder light that comes on after a certain number of miles/hours of engine running, it goeas out after about 2 minutes or so after you start the car. Tha latter is an indicator of a code set by one or more of the car's "brains". If you ask me, spending $150 for a reset tool for a service reminder is kind of silly, since the light doesn't stay on all the time and is not really an indication of anything important. The check engine light, however, is a different story. That being said, there is a tool out there sold by one Alex Peper (you can find out more at http://www.obd-2.com) that is simply a Windows program and a serial port adapter for your PC to work with the OBDII socket in your car. That package costs something like $120 and will read all the standard OBDII codes stored in memory as well as clear them (thereby extinguishing the CEL), a bargain, I would say. I do not own one of these things because I don't own a laptop and I don't feel like running a long wire from my home to my car to do this. Clearly, this product is meant for the laptop (but there is no reason it won't work on a desktop system). As a bonus, Alex has figured out how to extinguish the service reminder light in the 850s and S/V70s. I think some people have bought this package and have had some success with it. I personally went out and bought a generic OBDII scanner at my local AutoZone for asomething like $160. It is made by Actron (here's the link for that:
http://www.actron.com/cgi-bin/web_store.cgi?page=cp9035.htm&cart_id=1145629_8456).
This gadget will also read all the generic codes and clear them, but will not do anything for the service reminder light. Also, I've seen packages for the Palm that were reasonably priced. I think that Palm is a perfect platform for something like this. Here's the link to one of those:

Hope this is helpful.
Oh, BTW, there are many non-generic functions and codes that Volvo uses in their systems that will not show up on any of the generic scanners. I had a nasty re-curring 611 and 612 codes (fine and gross leak in the fuel vapor recovery system) and the Actron reader read no codes, but was able to clear the CEL anyway.
Good luck
