I know that you did not want any comments about washing engines, but this topic has been on this board before.

Washing engines went out with ballast resistors.

You can mess up a lot of electrical components with a good wash.

Rubber parts can be brightened with tire dressing (not armorall!) and a rag, the other parts can be wiped with a rag and some kerosene or paint thinner. Do not use a lot of anything.

Better yet, visit a relative or a friend, your time is too important to be spent washing your engine!
