Take your car back. You should never have gas fumes, ever. Replacing the filter does not have anything to do with a CEL, so find out what caused it. Most autoparts store will lend you a scanner to be used in the parking lot, letting you clear it also.

And, if you don't get a good explaination for the gas leak, find another mechanic.
