The '01 V70 radio is like the S80 and now S60 too, a real bummer to remove.
It's VERY easy to damage both the radio and climate control unit R&Ring these 2 parts so be VERY CAREFULL and yes, there's a trick to it.
The first thing you must do is move the shifter to L, then remove the pen holder and shifter bezel (both just pop out) and seperate the 2 shifter bezel parts to get the outer part out of your way. Next, remove the 2 torx screws at the bottom of the climate control unit, then you'll need 2 plastic devices of some kind (Volvo sells these inexpensive tools called a "bone tool" which are ideal). Don't use metal objects or you'll certainly do damage. The tools are hard, thin, plastic blade type devices which were made for doing interior work w/o damaging interior parts and cost about $4 each.
You need to put 2 plastic blade type tools in between the climate control unit and radio prying the climate unit downwards, then you VERY carefully take 2 screwdrivers and pry outwards at the top of the climate unit. The unit should then release from the 2 clips (if done correctly) and you then remove the climate unit, don't unplug it, just pull it out and downwards.
Then remove the two lower torx screws holding the radio in and manuver it out.
Another possible trickbag with replacing one of these newer type radios is that they require software to function and the cars network knows the OEM radio is there. There's software to remove the radio from the network so that you won't possibly have any weird network errors further down the road if you just remove the radio and leave its software loaded. At this point you're probably finding all this hard to believe but it's true. Now, your new aftermarket system (assuming that's your intention?) should work OK w/o removing the stock radios software but I'm telling you about that because that's what we've been told at school and I have yet to see an aftermarket system in a newer car, so I don't know what'll happen if you leave the old radios software in.
Note: I've seen many guys do damage to both the radio and climate control faceplates attempting to remove them so be very carefull.
