In the UK the Consumer's Association have also given Volvo 850s a tough time about reliability - especially on the electrics.
I would concur on this, having owned two 850s that have suffered various electrical problems - not surprisingly perhaps, since practically everything on the car is electrical.
Interestingly, my 850s are at either end of the model life in the UK, one was a 1992 model and my current one is a 96 (99 registered since it's an import from Volvo Sweden's fleet).
Yet the problems are similar - though they have solved the "bush eating" appetite of my early one.
On dealer service, again there is a considerable variation - some are absolutely awful, others do try though they don't always succeed.
If you join the Owner's Club though, they may perhaps make an extra effort since you're going to be a "difficult" customer if they don't do the job right.
And if it's the same in the US, you get discounts on parts...
