It took me awhile to fully understand and appreciate what can be done with the DLCs found on earlier models. After understanding (reading Volvo manuals) the different test modes and techniques for both reading and inputting codes, it became obvious that a careless input, could put you in the wrong test mode, thus changing things like how your transmission behaves to resetting the instrument panel.
