There are 2 places where there are schrader valves to add freon for the AC. There is one on the top of the radiator that requires some special adapter/coupler that only the dealers have. There is another "standard" schrader valve on the AC line in the area about under the power steering reservoir. This is the port that I used to add a can of freon using a standard AC recharge kit that you can buy at Walmart or any auto parts store.
I think Volvo included the second port because they knew that many AC shops might not have the special coupler. But they put it in a place that's kind of hard to get to.
BTW, I added that one can of freon about 3 years ago and my AC stills blows nice and cold. It should blow about 40-45 degrees on a real hot day while driving and the fan on low speed. You can measure it with an AC thermometer (available everywhere, about $5). Just stick the probe into the center vent and watch it as you drive.
Good luck.
