Is the tank really almost full?

The miles to empty is a calculation of: gallons of gas left in the tank according to the sender times your current average MPG, derived by the fuel flow through the injectors.
You will probably run out of gas at about the 5-10 miles to go figure, unless you have been racing and then started coasting the last ten miles.

It is possible that the sender is faulty, or the gauge is faulty, or both. Use the trip meter next to the odometer to verify miles traveled and actual fuel mileage.
