850 NO CRANK 850 1985

The starter solenoid is always connected to the battery. Grounding it will engage the starter. You didn't do anything by connecting the red wire, which is already connected to the battery.
There is a small wire, not connected to anything, on the driver's fender with a blue or green female plug. This is the mechanic's plug to the starter to remotely run the starter.

Do NOT ground the red wire at the battery.
