Is there a pre-pump (a.k.a., transfer pump) in the tank? ... V70-XC70 2001

If yours was a 240, I'd say without hesitation it's the little 2 inch hose between the transfer pump (in-tank or prepump) and the metal fuel line on the fuel pickup assembly in the fuel tank -- it's prone to deteriorate after a couple of hundred thousand miles, or maybe 25 years or so, so when the fuel level drops below that hose, it sucks fumes instead of liquid fuel, and the engine is fuel-starved.

Since your problem is also tank-level related, I'd suspect something similar going on.
