Looking at a T-5 today with 130K miles, and made what I thought was a pretty low offer, considering. Unfortunately (?) he took the offer. Here are the main issues, tell me if I've completely lost it!
Blowing smoke out the dipstick tube and a slight likely RMS leak. I expect to spend next weekend under the intake replacing the oil separator and hoping for the best with the help of Auto-Rx. But the compression is good.
Slap-dash brake lines: I'll be replacing all the flexible front-end lines. Is there ever a plastic line that's acceptable? (That's what's on there now.)
I'll be getting familiar with engine mounts, the top and front end are shot, I didn't look at the others, but don't expect them to look really good, either.
I'll probably have to sell it when gas prices start going up again, but hope to have some fun with it in the meantime.
And some other forgotten advice: never put in print or email what you wouldn't want to see on the front page of the New York Times. I wrote up my concerns for his edification, not expecting that he would take the offer, including some comments about the brake lines. As I drove away (he wasn't there at the time) it occurred to me that maybe it was a relative or friend that did the brakes. Sure enough: future son-in-law. He said he'd have a good time razzing the poor guy. How embarrassing!
