We brought our 2002 XC into a reputable independent Volvo garage (SVS in Sacramento) reporting that the power steering wasn't working. They looked at the car the next day and called me up to confirm that they were "almost certain" that it was the pump - I authorized the replacement of the PS pump at $700 parts and labor. The next day they call and say that it was actually the rack, and that the new rack and replacement is $1,950 and also that the new rack requires a new pump anyway so I would be financially responsible for both. Initially they told me that if the pump *wasn't* the problem I wouldn't have to pay for its replacement...just the rack. I'm expecting them to remove the charges for the pump. Am I wrong in asking them to do this?
