I had the same problem on a 1994 850. After removing the light cover from the inside, inspect all metal electrical contacts. My problem was that a little bit of plastic had melted onto one of the metal contacts causing the bulb failure indication. Look for any melted plastic or other foreign objects on all metal contacts inside the light housing and clean off with a knife if necessary.
