Barrier tests are one thing, real world experience is another. I don't think that BMW has much of a safety history. As suggested by the rear fog light that they actually pull out of US delivery cars. BMW was still building Isettas when Volvo was building 544s.
I know that the current 5 series and in fact the X5 do great on barrier tests, especially since I've listened to BMW's TV ads. But I suspect their heart isn't in it, if I were going to crash a car - I'd choose a Mercedes, a Volvo or a SAAB, in that order.
If Volvos are not safer than BMWs then to explain the insurance claims data their drivers must be better than BMW drivers. Based on the evidence I see in the way V70s and 850 wagons full of kids are being driven while mom is jabbing on the cell phone, I'd argue that surely can not be the case.
