With keyfob in hand, try leaning on the closed hatch and see if the lock then works properly. On the older cars, when the rubber bumpers get old and hard, the locks sometimes do that.
You could move the strike plate reward 1/16th inch and see if that helps. Also check the latch itself. With the hatch open, close the lock using a round phillips screwdriver shaft. Listen for the second click and check the dash light or the remote lock and flashing lights.
