Extended Gear Shift??!? 850 96

I wonder if anyone has experienced this unusual problem. It seems when it is cold, and/or the car has been sitting when I first go to drive it, it goes, but seems to have a bit of trouble switching out of first gear. It feels like an extended gear shift... the dealer had no clue... and to prevent red-lining it, if I let up on the accelerator it will then shift to second gear. Any thoughts/solutons greatly appreciated!
