After reading Awilson's post I thought I should ask 850 1995

Keith, To clarify my post, I noticed the temp gauge go from 3 o'clock down to stone cold, then recover back to 3 o'clock in a matter of 5 seconds or so. Not a mild temperature change, but a complete loss of signal and bounce back.
AFA your temp changes, it may just be that when on the highway there is sufficient air flow through the radiator to drop the coolant temp a bit, when stopped at a light, there obviously isn't.
