It depends on what your objectives are.
If your objectives are to use an engine oil that maintains its lubricity properties for a longer time under hard use and in a wider ambient temperature range, 10W-30 synthetic is better than 10W-30 petroleum.
Otherwise, you could use petroleum oil and change oil every 1500 to 2000 miles and have about the same effect except for the increased ambient temperature range synthetics offer.

Another interesting thing about synthetic oils is they tend to make car engines run quieter. The difference is more noticable with new engines.
