How can you tell the difference in the turbos?

I figure after new tires and base lining the car(new fluids, pcv service, new filters, etc) I will be in for an additional $1000 to $1,500.

Any idea on why the shift release button has to be used to get it into drive?

I had a 1996 964 for several years that was a nice car, but after the heater core went bad I sold it to someone with more diy ambition for that project. I do a lot of my own work, but didn't want to tackle that project. BTW, the AC is blowing cold, (one requirement here, for me, is good AC), and I am a little concerned about the evap going out as it would be a similar dash removal to the 964.
