So long as there is an outstanding code, the ECC will shut down. But as you found out, taking the fan out of auto mode will give you manual control.

The best way to clean out the the cabin temp sensors is to remove the grab handle and pull out the plastic cover. Then clean out the dust bunnies and dirt with a toothpick.

The 2 torx screws for the handle are hidden under the plastic at both ends of the handle. I forgot which way the plastic prys off the bottom of the handle, but it should be like a door.
