A/C freezes up? V70-XC70 1999

The AC stopped working but is not 'freezing' up. Taht odor you describe is the moisture on the evaporator being evaporated once the evaporator warms up.

I suggest that you inspect the compressor clutch gap, it is probably greater than .040in, making it to hard to engage the clutch when it heats up. There are several quick fixes to decrease the clutch gap, just do a search for bread clips. Or have an AC shop remove the clutch and change the shims to decrease the gap.
