Although I am new to the 850 type Volvo, I have been buying and selling used vehicles for quite a few years. KlausC brings up some very important points about maintenance on that car that you are considering for $5500. Unless you are very handy with your tools, you can easily spend another $1000 in repair and maintenance costs to make up for what may have been overlooked by the previous owner. There are many good deals available if you want to spend the time to find them. Two cases in point are the 1995 Isuzu Rodeo that I found last parked in the woods because of a broken timing belt. $300 dollars bought that car and $136.00 + 30 hours labor repaired it for my 16 year old daughter.

Another one is this 1993 850GLT with 134400 on the odometer that I just found for $450.00. It will cost around $500.00 in parts to bring it back up to shape, but most of the enjoyment is in the rebuilding.

My advice (which is worth what you pay for it!) would be to keep looking.
