Humm, octane is simple an antiknock additive. The hotter the engine the higher the octane that is required. IE jet engines require very high octane, JP8 usually for Mil spec. If your engine is not hot enough then this octane goes unburned. 91, 93, and probably even Sunoco 98 you are ok with. 110, and 120 however will more then likely gum your engine. There are trade offs to everything.
