If it fails and you're going to wait it out (basically you're going to let it leak out to empty) seal off your compressor. Its still going to spin and keeping oil in it should keep it good enough to work when you put a new evap in. If the compressor dries out you can end up breaking the shaft which takes the drive belt with it. You don't want to have to deal with all that nonsense.. Oh, and keep the A/C off if you go this route, no sense tripping codes when it decides its not cold enough in the cabin...
