Yell at Volvo for using "green" plastic! This has been happening since the 1998 cars, with no resolution.

You cannot 'clean' it off. It is the plastic itself that is bio-degrading. My window switches and mirror switch is the same.

I wish I had a good answer. The parts guys just want me to part with a lot of money to get new knobs, which will also degrade after 5-7 years.
