The 850 engine relies on good engine vacuum, and that should be your first attack. The OBD I system is primative but good enough to highlight the worst problems: O2 sensor, ECT sensor, speed sensor, ect.

Neither OBDI or OBDII will track vacuum problems, which will mimmic all sorts of different problems. So I suggest you start by replacing vacuum lines, check the air supply line to the throttle body for cracks, clean the throttle body and the PCV system, and do a general tune up.
