The engine uses engine oil. The trans uses Dextron III. The angle drive uses synthetic gear oil. All are separate and sealed from each other. If the angle drive is overfilled, it will blow oil out of the vent hole. The fill plug is a .85 liter level, there is a bulletin that specifies a .75 liter fluid level. Also, the early AWD cars had the incorrect fluid in the angle drive. The bulletin specifies the fill level and fluid part number. If they got the correct fluid in the angle drive after the repair, it won't smell like the petroleum hypoid you are used to. If they filled it up to the plug, it is overfilled and will blow fluid out and drip down the front side of the angle drive. The rear main seals on these cars go without warning. I have seen one leaking at 7k and less than a year. If the fluid level and type is correct in the angle drive, it sounds like it may be the rear main leaking.
