The first digit tells the series (as in 200 series, 800 series, but you probably knew that)

The second digit tells the number of cylinders (850 has 5cyl., 240 has 4cyl., etc.)

The third digit tells the number of doors (854=4 door sedan, 855=5 door wagon)
