I think your warranty should cover this as it is a part of the emissions system, I think they have made a mistake with quoting you the prices.

The air pump feeds air into the exhaust system to help continue the burn of the expelled exhuast. By keeping it burning it helps to heat up the O2 sensor and the cat longer lowering emissions at cold start up,.,.,....

Although the air pump has failed the root cause of the problem may not have been the pump. At the back of the engine on the exhaust side is the PAIR valve(Looks like a silver disc from the top), This is opened via a vacume line through a solenoid from the manifold. It gets opened at cold start up and at the same time the pump is started. Once the system is off the PAIR valves have been known not to seat properly and allow vapour to enter the fresh air hose back to the air pump. Once in the air pump the vapour condenses.... next thing yah know its gets filled with water, and if you live in cold country it freezes in winter.

So if they fix the air-pump and don't put another PAIR valve in the next one is going to be on you.

To tell if you have exhaust vapour in the airpump sniff the large opening,

the odour is horrible and brown in colour.
