Neil-

The coolant temp sender probably failed without relation to the thermostat. The car set the code because there was a faulty signal from the sender. I change a LOT of thermostats for low operating temperature and the guage is reading in the middle of the range. The ONLY way to check for a faulty thermostat is with the Volvo Scan Tool. Even with an infrared thermometer on the thermostat housing, you can't get an accurate temp reading. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of coolant temp senders failing. (setting codes)
