The grapevine says that the center bearing cannot be replaced without replacing the shaft also. I hope I am wrong.

Best bet is to call a few truck repair facilities and show them the shaft. Removing the shaft is easy, sort of, on a lift and a bit harder on jack stands. Just remember where the bolts came from and mark the shaft connections for balanced re-assembly with paint.
