96 960 wagon wiper...two answers

First - The 960 and the other Volvos in your signature line are RWD cars, so placing this post in the AWD forum may yield few answers unless, of course, some AWD/FWD Volvos use the same rear window wiper.

I have a 1997 965 which presented me with the same problem. Solution #1 is to get the Volvo replacement part. Costs more than Solution #2 and will probably get you a new blade and a set of six-language Volvo instructions.

Solution #2 is the one I used. Having a number of 16-inch 240 blades in better condition, I chose to cut one to the 13-inch length to fit into the 965 blade holder. Takes close inspection to see which windshield blades can be removed and re-fit. Note that a worn 960 front blade can be used if it has 13-inches in reasonably good condition.

The blade holder is removed from that big plastic cover by pushing it directly towards the pivot end. It may take a light tap with a blunt instrument. Do not try to pry it out, the little clip that holds it in breaks easily and repairing it is not easily described. Don't ask me how I know.

Once you have the blade holder out, it's a bench job to get the replacement rubber into place. Have some small screw drivers and a pair of alligator pliers handy, and work at having the replacement blade unit bowed so the end of the rubber touch the glass first as the wiper unit is pivoted into place.

I don't recall the quoted price for the blade when I called the dealer, just remember the shock. Have you priced the little blades for the front headlight wipers?

Good Luck,

Bob
