Cam seals are leaking and have been for a while. I need to replace them. Already did the intake cam. Easy job, about 45 minutes. My engine has the VVT on the exhaust cam and I don't want to make a big mess of it.
I have some instructions, but very confusing and calls out a lot of special tools I don't have.
Can this be done without the special tools? My idea is:
line up the timing marks and go another 90 degrees then back to marks. To take the preload off the VVT.
Pull the cam position sensor and make a tool to lock the cam (may be not needed since the cam does not rotate when the timing belt is removed.
Loosen the torx in the center of the VVT and remove. I think it is a plug the reveals another torx if I am understanding the terrible instructions.
Remove the second torx and remove the VVT along with the timing gear.
Replace the seal.
Install the parts in the reverse order to the proper torques.
The timing gear is slotted and as I read, it seems you need to loosen the bolts to preload the VVT?
Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. I am in process of doing a head gasket and rings on a 98, but my 2001 is really pouring oil out the cams. PVC system seem ok and don't notice any crankcase pressure. Seals have been leaking for 3 years now, but in the last few months has gotten progressively worse.
Thanks again for all your comments
