Russell,
I have to agree. Each year I'm amazed (amused?) by the number of SUV owners who feel bulletproof in the snow with 4WD. We live near Donner Summit (I-80 over the Sierras) and the ratio of cars to SUVs taking up residence in a snowbank is about 1 to 3. SUV drivers forget 4WD (or AWD for that matter) doesn't improve stopping distances. They also don't have any experience with 4WD in terms of skid control. With the right throttle and steering responses you can recover better in a FWD or 4WD/AWD vehicle. Unfortunately, no one takes the time to learn how their vehicle handles in low/lost traction situations. A one-day car control clinic is a worthwhile expenditure of time and money.
