Flashing ^ Up Arrow & Check Engine Light On S70 98

I was driving down the interstate this morning and had to slow down rather quick due to an accident. As I crept along far approx 1/2 mile the flashing up arrow and check engine light came on. After passing the accident scene the transmission seemed to be in 3rd 0r 4th gear and would not go into kick-down mode, I drove approx 10 more miles to an exit then shut down the engine and waited about 5 minutes. When I restarted the engine every thing seemed fine as far as engine performance and transmission shifting went , but the flashing up arrow and c/e light came back on. Was this just a glitch, or could it mean trouble ? The car has 63,000 on it.
